Maritime Training and Certification

Maritime training and certification covers a wide range of courses, from pre-sea training for new entrants to specialized and refresher courses for experienced seafarers, leading to globally recognized certifications. Key programs include the General Purpose Rating (GP Rating) for entry-level crew, the Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course, and a variety of STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) courses, such as Personal Survival Techniques (PST) and Elementary First Aid. To ensure certifications are valid, it is crucial to attend courses at institutes approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) in India or equivalent national maritime authorities.

Types of training and certification

• GP Rating: A 6-month course that makes candidates eligible to join as deck or engine crew on Indian or foreign shipping companies.
• Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS): A 1-year course that leads to a degree in Nautical Science.
• Graduate Marine Engineering (GME): A 1-year course for mechanical engineers to become a Class IV Marine Engineer Officer.
• STCW courses: Mandatory training for all seafarers, covering essential safety skills and emergency procedures.
• Complete the course: Finish the required pre-sea or advanced training program.
